Which pens can I use with my Cricut machine?

Using Pens with the Cricut Explore and Cricut Maker

The pens that can be used with the Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore machines can be viewed here. These pens are manufactured specifically for the Maker and Explore machines and will not fit into other Cricut machines. The Explore One machine requires a separate purchase of an accessory adapter in order to be able to use Cricut pens.

In order to write with your Maker or Explore machine, you will need to ensure that your image or text is set to Write instead of Cut. You may need to change the Line Type of your image or text in order to accomplish this. If you would like to make your machine write on another image or layer, follow the steps from this help article to prepare the design to write and cut.

Cricut no longer manufactures or sells pens for these machines, but it is possible that other vendors may still have stock.

  • Gel Pens: Cricut gel pens came with a special housing. Simply insert the pen into the housing as instructed in the pen packaging, and then replace the blade housing with the gel pen housing. Your images will then be drawn instead of cut.

  • Cricut Inks: Cricut Inks pens were formatted to be used in place of the blade housing. No special housing is needed to use these pens with your Expression or other machine. Simply replace the blade housing with the Cricut Inks pen and your images will be drawn instead of cut.
