Cricut machines are made to open with very little effort, often utilizing a slow-open mechanism. The doors will open all the way on their own with no assistance. Gentle pressure may be used to speed the opening of the machine, but forcing them aggressively can stress and damage the doors.

To properly open a Cricut Joy machine
Cricut Joy uses a magnetic mechanism to hold the machine door shut. Separate the top of the front white panel from where it touches the top of the main blue body of the machine; you will feel it release from the magnetic pull that holds it closed. Then, allow the door to fall gently into open position.
To close the door, raise it until it connects to the magnets at the top of the machine.
