What is kerning?
Kerning refers to the spacing between letters or characters in printed text. In Design Space, we've optimized kerning for system fonts and many Cricut fonts so the spacing between letters or characters is automatically more natural.
How it works
To use kerned fonts follow the steps below:
1. Select the Text tool or an existing text box, then select the font drop-down.
2. By default, the font list is filtered by fonts with kerning. Browse or search to find a font and select it. Your kerned text will render on the Canvas.
Tip: To view only Cricut fonts, or only fonts installed on your device (system fonts), select the appropriate index.
3. That's it!
FAQ
How do I find kerned fonts?
When you use the Text tool and open the font menu, a kerned fonts filter in the upper right is applied by default. With that filter applied, all fonts displayed in the list are fonts with kerning.
Do fonts in the kerned filter weld automatically?
Yes, wherever kerned letters or characters touch or overlap they will weld automatically on the project preview screen but remain editable on the Canvas, even after you save and close your project.
However, if you Ungroup letters to work with them individually, they're no longer in the same text box, so you'll need to use the Weld tool to merge touching or overlapping letters or characters before sending your project to the machine.
How do I apply kerning to my saved projects?
Simply double-click to open the text box. Then, make a minor edit, such as adding and deleting a character or space. If the font you used is one with kerning, you'll see the improved spacing apply.
Will kerning work with fonts I installed on my device?
Yes, most fonts you download and install on your device will be kerned. However, there may be some fonts that may not support kerning.
I don't see my font in the font list. Where did it go?
Because the font list is, by default, filtered for fonts with kerning, fonts without kerning will not appear. Simply de-select the kerned fonts filter, then search or browse for your font.
Will kerned text in my saved projects remain kerned in Design Space for mobile?
No. Because the kerning feature is currently available only in Design Space for Desktop, when you open a project containing kerned fonts on a mobile device, the text reverts to an unkerned state. If you save any changes to the project in the mobile app, the text is saved in an unkerned state. To reapply kerning, open the project in Design Space for Desktop, double-click the text to open the text box, then make a minor edit, such as adding and deleting a letter or space. You'll see the improved spacing apply.
