Firmware is essential for your Cricut machine to operate properly and communicate with your computer or mobile device. When you first set up your Cricut machine you will be guided through steps to update your firmware if an update is needed.
After the initial setup, you will occasionally be prompted to update your firmware as new features and performance improvements are added.

Note: The following steps are the same for Cricut Joy and Cricut Joy Xtra machines.
- Ensure that your Cricut Joy machine is powered on and paired with your computer. Learn how to pair the Bluetooth here.
- Design Space will automatically start any needed firmware updates during the new machine setup, or when you are proceeding to cut your current project.
- The firmware update will begin and a progress bar will appear on the screen.
- The machine will reboot during the update, and you'll receive a notice that the update was successful. Select Continue to proceed with the new machine setup, or to proceed with your cut.
- Ensure that your Cricut Joy machine is powered on and paired with your mobile device. Learn how to pair the Bluetooth here.
- You will receive an alert when a firmware update is necessary, whether it is during the new machine setup, or whether you are proceeding to cut your current project. Select your machine and the firmware update will automatically begin.
- The firmware update will begin and a progress bar will appear on the screen.
- The machine will reboot during the update, so select Reconnect when prompted.
- After a quick check of the machine you will receive a notice that the update was successful. Select Continue to proceed with the new machine setup, or to proceed with your cut.

- You will receive an alert when a firmware update is necessary, whether it is during new machine setup, or whether you are proceeding to cut your current project. Select Update.
