How to connect Cricut Maker 5 to a computer or mobile device

You can connect your Cricut Maker 5 easily through the Machine Picker in Design Space. Use Bluetooth (BLE) to connect wirelessly with a compatible computer or mobile device or connect directly with a USB-C cable if you’re using a Windows or Mac computer. 

How to connect Cricut Maker 5 with Bluetooth (BLE)

  1. Plug in your Cricut Maker 5 and place it within 10–15 feet (3–4.6 meters) of your computer, phone, or tablet.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on for your device.
  3. Open Design Space and sign into your account.
  4. Start the Machine Setup or open a project and click “Make.”
  5. In Design Space, open the machine picker and select your Cricut Maker 5 from the list.
  6. When your machine appears, select it and follow the on-screen instructions. If your device asks for Bluetooth or nearby device permissions, be sure to allow them.

Tip: Don’t try to pair your Cricut Maker 5 in your device’s Bluetooth settings. Instead, always use the machine picker in Design Space to connect and manage your Bluetooth connection.

 

How to connect Cricut Maker 5 with USB-C 

You can use the included USB-C cable to connect your Cricut Maker 5 to Windows and Mac computers. Connection via USB cable is not supported on mobile.

  1. Plug one end of the included USB-C cable into the port on the back of your Cricut Maker 5.
  2. Connect the other end directly to a USB-C port on your computer.
  3. Open Design Space, then select Cricut Maker 5 during Machine Setup or from the machine picker.
  4. If your computer does not have a USB-C port, use a compatible data adapter. For the most reliable connection when using USB, connect directly to your computer instead of using an unpowered USB hub.

Note: A USB cable can provide a data connection, but Cricut Maker 5 must still be connected to its power adapter. 

 

Switching between devices 

Want to move from your laptop to your phone, or another device? No problem!

  • Make sure to close Design Space or disconnect your Cricut Maker 5 on your first device before you connect it to a new one. For example, if you’ve been crafting on your laptop, close Design Space there before jumping onto your phone or tablet.
  • Only one device at a time can operate your Cricut Maker 5. When you’re ready, open Design Space on your second device and choose your machine from the machine picker.  You’ll be set to create in just a few clicks!
  • The best part? All your projects saved to your Cricut account in the cloud will be waiting for you, no matter which supported device you’re signed in on.  
  • Heads up: Any projects you saved for offline use will stay on the original device, so you should save important projects to the cloud if you’ll need them elsewhere. 

 

Complete first time setup 

When you set up your Cricut Maker 5 for the first time, Design Space may download and install a firmware update. Make sure your machine stays plugged into power, make sure Design Space stays open, and don’t disconnect your USB cable or Bluetooth connection until the update is finished.

Once the update is complete, you’ll be all set to start creating!

 

Having trouble connecting? Try these quick fixes

  • Make sure your Cricut Maker 5 is plugged in, turned on and placed within 10–15 feet (3–4.6 meters) of your computer or mobile device.
  • Check that Bluetooth is turned on for your device, and that Design Space has permission to use Bluetooth and access nearby devices. This will help ensure a smooth connection with your machine.
    • Check Settings > Bluetooth and ensure Bluetooth is “on.”
    • Check Bluetooth permissions for Design Space:  
      • Apple computer or iOS device: 
        Open Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Bluetooth. Find “Cricut Design Space” in the list and make sure the switch is turned on.
      • Android phone or tablet: 
        Go to Settings, then Apps (or Apps & Notifications). Find “Cricut Design Space,” tap Permissions, then Nearby devices, and select Allow.
      • Windows computers: 
        Windows usually allows this automatically, so you typically don’t need to change any settings. 
  • Make sure Design Space is closed on any other nearby devices that might be connected to your Cricut Maker 5.
  • Restart your Cricut machine: Unplug it from power, wait a few moments, then plug it back in. Afterward, click “Try Again” in Design Space.
  • Quit and reopen Design Space, then select your Cricut Maker 5 from the machine picker.
  • If you’re using a USB-C cable, try a different data-capable cable or a different USB port on your computer.
