Cricut and AI: How To Use It, What Happens, and Related Questions

Cricut’s Platform and the Design Space® app have a wide variety of content, features, tools, and templates to help you spark and ignite your creativity. We’ve introduced some new, optional AI-powered features, so we’d like to take the time to better explain how these AI-powered features work and answer some frequently asked questions about AI, uploaded images, and more.

Our Mission Has Always Been About You

For more than 20 years, Cricut has been focused on one thing: helping people lead creative lives. Whether it’s a custom birthday banner for a first party, labels for your pantry, or a handmade gift, we want to help you turn your idea into something real and personal. Our mission has not changed, and it will not change.

AI is one of our newest tools in that mission. It is not a replacement for the creativity, originality, and personal expression that defines this community. Every project still starts with you: your idea, your occasion, your reason for making. For those who want to, AI can help you get from inspiration to creation even faster.

Some of you are excited to try new tools. Some of you have questions about what happens to your photos and your content. Some of you would rather skip AI entirely and keep creating the way you always have. All these approaches are valid, and all of you are welcome here. This article is our effort to be straightforward about how Cricut uses AI, what happens to the content you upload, and how you might choose to control your creative experience.

How Cricut Uses AI Today

Cricut has introduced several new, optional AI-powered features across its Platform. Each one is purpose-built around the same principle: you bring your creativity, and AI helps you bring it to life in a snap. AI-powered features are identified with our AI icon so you can easily identify when a feature is AI-powered. Most AI-powered features require the use of Cricut Credits, our monthly credit system included at varying levels with each Cricut Access™ subscription plan – please visit https://cricut.com/plans for more details.

Our current AI-powered features include:

• Create AI: Embedded within Design Space canvas features, Create AI allows you to describe your dream image in a few words or provide an optional reference image for your custom image creation. Hit “generate,” and moments later an AI-generated image carefully optimized for use with your Cricut machine will be added to your Design Space Canvas. Each Create AI generation uses one Cricut Credit.
• AI Project Designer: This chat-based tool, easily located from Design Space’s homepage, allows you to collaborate with AI to generate, edit, and refine ready-to-make designs. AI Project Designer currently supports 2D projects such as party decor, labels, apparel, and home decor. While chatting with AI Project Designer is free to use, each generation, change, or enhancement of images requires one Cricut Credit.
• Cricut Coloring Pages: Transform any image or turn your idea into your own custom coloring page using various curated coloring page styles with Cricut AI. Each Cricut Color Page requires one Cricut Credit.
• Cricut Paint by Numbers: Turn your photos or ideas into custom paint-by-number designs, download and print, and then paint. Each Cricut Paint by Number download requires one Cricut Credit.
• Cricut Photo Art: Upload a personal photo or image you own, choose from our featured styles like watercolor portrait, pop art, urban ink, retro print, and more, and Cricut Photo Art will generate custom artwork. Each Cricut Photo Art generation requires one Cricut Credit.
• Cricut StickerPix™ features & templates: While not required for use with Cricut’s newest sticker machines, both Cricut StickerPix Print™ and Cricut StickerPix Print + Cut™ pair well with AI-powered features, filters, and templates in Design Space. Feel free to use these optional AI-powered features with your Cricut Credits to transform your own photos into stylized sticker designs. Whether you would like to try these features or not, Cricut StickerPix machines don’t require AI to be used – there is a large host of features, filters, and templates not powered by AI available for free or with a paid Cricut Access subscription where no Cricut Credits are required.

As with every project, every one of these AI-powered features starts with you: your idea, your photo, your description, your project. If you choose to use these features, AI can tackle the tricky technical work, so you can focus your time on the creative choices that make each project personal.

All content created with AI-powered features is free for personal use, but not all such content is eligible for the limited commercial sales permitted under our Angel Policy. From a high level, however, any AI-generated content (i.e., content created solely by AI) is not part of the Angel Policy, whereas content you own or have sufficient license rights to that is merely AI-enhanced (i.e., filtered, tweaked, or modified by an AI-powered feature) may be eligible for Angel Policy treatment.

What Happens When You Upload Photos and Images? What Happens When You Use Your Uploads with AI-powered Features?

When you upload a photo or image to Cricut’s Platform (including Design Space, DTF Transfers, Cricut StickerPix, etc.), your content is stored in your Cricut account. It is your content, it stays in your account, and we protect that information in conformity with our Privacy Policy.

• When you choose to use features or effects not powered by AI – including offset, warp, Print Then Cut, and sharpen/color correction/crop – or you want to simply print your uploaded image directly to a Cricut StickerPix machine, your uploaded image will stay within the Cricut ecosystem and your account; it is therefore not sent to third-party AI service providers.
• When you choose to use one of the optional AI-powered features described above, your image is relayed through Cricut’s Platform to our authorized enterprise third-party AI service providers and then processed to deliver your generated results. As explained in our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, the integration of these third-party AI services is to help power Cricut AI. If you do not use an AI-powered feature, your uploaded content is not shared with these third-party AI service providers. AI-generated and AI-enhanced images and projects made from your uploads are stored for you in your Cricut account – they aren’t added to the wider Cricut library or shared for duplication or making with other users. If you choose to share and publish one of your Cricut projects to your Cricut profile publicly, please be aware that it will be available for inspirational viewing purposes only. However, even then, Cricut users may still not be able to use or customize your AI-generated or AI-enhanced images or projects.

Cricut takes privacy seriously. Under both scenarios, we build with privacy and security in mind, and where we work with third-party technology partners, we do so under agreements designed to protect your content. AI as a Creative Partner, Not a Replacement

Cricut’s AI-powered features are a starting point, not the finished product. You bring the idea, the personal touch, and the reason behind the project. If wanted, AI can help you get there faster. You are in control of whether and how you use these tools, and you can edit, adjust, or discard any AI-generated result before it becomes part of your project.

The large majority of Cricut’s library is human-created, and it currently contains well over 1.5 million human-created images, fonts, and projects. Cricut continues to invest in its human-centered artist programs, including employing in-house employee artists, partnering with creative contractors, and continuing to partner with human designers worldwide through Cricut’s Contributing Artist Program. The creativity of humans remains at the heart of everything that makes Cricut and Design Space special.

AI-generated and AI-enhanced content made from your uploaded content is not available to other users for duplication and customization. Cricut also asks all users to disclose when projects contain AI-generated content, consistent with the growing industry expectation around AI transparency. Cricut is also working to implement identification of AI-assisted content across its Platform. These efforts will continue to help maintain trust across the community and ensure that when you see a project, you know what went into making it.

If AI is not for you, that is completely okay. Design Space and Cricut’s Platform work for everyone—you can still work the way you always have with you in the driver’s seat. You can browse, search, and create using our vast library of human-designed content, templates, and projects without ever touching an AI-powered feature. Nothing about your existing experience changes unless you choose to explore these AI-powered features.
