Troubleshoot power, loading, rollers, buttons, pauses, movement, and unusual sounds on Cricut Maker 5.
Most issues you might encounter with Cricut Maker 5 can be resolved in just a few minutes. Follow the troubleshooting steps below to get back to creating.
Normal machine behavior
These behaviors are expected during normal use:
- The machine measures material before cutting
- The machine will pause for tool changes
- Multi-pass cuts can take longer
- Louder sounds are normal when cutting thicker materials
Unusual machine behavior
- Machine won't power on after checking connections
- Pauses mid-cut with no instructions or indicators
- Loud, unusual clicking or scratching noises
- Cutting tool doesn't move or moves erratically
- Materials won't load or feed correctly
If you experience any of these issues, continue reading below for troubleshooting steps.
Before troubleshooting
Ensure your machine is connected to power, the indicator light is on, Design Space is open, your desired tool is installed properly, and the material is loaded correctly.
The machine does not turn on
- Confirm that the Cricut power adapter with the appropriate regional plug adapter is securely connected to the machine and wall outlet.
- Inspect the cord, adapter, connector, and machine power port for visible damage. If any parts appear damaged, do not use.
- Try another wall outlet that is known to work. Avoid an outlet controlled via a switch, overloaded power strip, or extension cord for this test.
- Disconnect the power adapter from the machine and wall outlet for 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- If the indicator light still does not turn on, contact Cricut Member Care.
Note: Cricut Maker 5 turns on when connected to power; it does not have a separate power button.
The machine turns off or restarts
- Connect the Cricut power adapter directly to a wall outlet.
- Check that the connectors fit securely, and the cord is not pinched or stretched.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices from the computer if using USB.
- Restart Design Space and the connected device.
- If the machine loses power when the carriage or rollers move, stop using it and contact Cricut Member Care.
Note: During a firmware update, your machine may restart automatically.
A mat or material will not load
- Confirm Design Space is on the material load step, and the Go/Pause button is flashing.
- Align the mat or Smart Material under both material guides and evenly against both rollers.
- Trim a crooked Smart Material leading edge so that it is straight,
- Ensure the machine has been fully unplugged from power, then begin removing any visible scraps from the guide and roller paths.
- Reconnect power, reopen the project, and press Go/Pause once.
Important: Do not push or pull material through the rollers. Cricut Maker 5 begins your project automatically after it loads and measures the material.
Material feed crooked or slips
- Use a flat, undamaged mat with the correct grip strength for your material.
- If using Smart Materials without a mat, ensure the leading edge of the material is straight.
- When cutting on a mat, press material fully onto the mat and secure any specialty materials – such as tooling leather or wood – with additional tape as instructed. If the material is not firmly secured to the mat, it can come off the mat while feeding through the machine and cause crooked loading or a material jam.
- Make sure the mat or material contacts both rollers evenly.
- Clear the full feed path in front of and behind the machine.
- Move star wheels only when the material or project instructions require it.
- Do not use warped mats or damaged rolls of Smart Material.
Note: Bent or warped mats can cause jams, improper alignment, and inconsistent pressure.
The machine pauses or stops during a project
- Check Design Space for any prompts to change a tool, remove a pen, add foil, or take another action. Pauses for tool, pen, or foil changes are normal and expected as part of the cutting process.
- Check whether the Go/Pause button indicates that the project is paused. Press it once to resume only after the area is clear.
- Confirm the computer or mobile device is awake, and Design Space is open.
- If there are multiple instances of Design Space open, close all but the window with your current project.
- Close any applications that may be using significant system resources, such as video conferencing or media streaming programs.
- If connection with the machine has been lost, restore the connection and follow the message in Design Space.
Note: If you are connected via Bluetooth (BLE), ensure that other Bluetooth operations (such as music streaming or using Bluetooth headphones for calls) are not in use on your device. These can interfere with the machine’s connection.
- If the same project stops in the same place, save a copy and try a simpler version or another project. For large projects with multiple mats, images, or hidden layers, consider breaking it into smaller projects, this also makes saving and managing your work much easier.
The machine makes an unusual sound
- Pause the project and wait for all machine movement to stop.
- Check for a loose tool, unsecured material, lifted mat edge, or visible scrap in the material path.
- Confirm the Tool Clamp latch is closed, and the installed tool matches Design Space.
- Some dense-material and multi-pass operations sound different from everyday cutting. A new grinding, scraping, or knocking sound is not normal.
- Unload mat or material from the machine and disconnect the machine from power. Then, reconnect to power.
- If severe noise continues with no material loaded, disconnect power and contact Cricut Member Care.
Note: Cutting or engraving thicker materials like acrylics or wood, as well as using multi-pass operations, can produce sounds that are louder or different from normal cutting. This is expected, typically not a cause for concern.
The carriage or Tool Clamp moves erratically
- Disconnect power and remove any loose material or scraps that are safely reachable.
- Check that the tool is seated correctly, and the latch is closed.
- Reconnect power and try a simple project with the Premium Fine-Point Blade or Cutting Tool.
- If the carriage remains stuck, moves unevenly, or strikes the side of the machine, contact Cricut Member Care.
Important: Do not force the carriage by hand or try to free it with a tool as this can damage its internal mechanisms.
Buttons do not respond
- Check Design Space for the next required step and see if it is waiting for you to take action.
- Disconnect the machine from power for 30 seconds and reconnect it.
- Restart Design Space and reconnect through the machine picker.
- If a button is physically stuck, damaged, or does not respond after power cycling, contact Cricut Member Care.
