You can create more visual interest for your project by combining multiple operations in one project. For instructions, select your machine and follow the steps below.
Note: Cricut Foil Transfer Systems are supported on Design Space for Desktop only. This functionality is not currently available in Design Space for mobile devices.
In this project, we use the Foil operation in Fine, Medium, and Bold, as well as Draw and Score.
- Insert desired images and text, then select an operation for each. In this example, we duplicated the flower image and set one operation to Foil – Fine, another to Foil – Medium, and the third to Foil – Bold.
Tip: For text with a single-stroke appearance, choose a font that has a Writing style.
- Select the foil color you plan to use from the color swatch panel so Design Space can prompt you to use the correct material. Do the same for any Draw operation, so you get prompted to switch pen colors.
- Position images as desired. Use Attach to fasten Foil, Draw, Score, etc. layers to the appropriate Cut layer. Then select Make It to send your project to the machine.
- Attached items appear together on the same mat in the preview, along with an ordered list of each operation to be executed by the machine. Continue to the cut screen.
- Select the material setting for your base material. In this example, we're using cardstock. Follow the on-screen prompts to insert tools and prep materials as needed.
Important: For Foil Transfer projects with Cricut Explore Machines always turn your dial to Custom, then select your base material from the list in Design Space. Do not use the dial settings with Foil Transfer Tool, even if they match your base material (i.e. do not use the Cardstock dial setting, even if you're foiling onto cardstock).
Important: Move white star wheels to the right. If your project uses multiple colors or operations on the same cut layer, do not unload the mat when it's time to change the foil color or tip. Be sure to remove foil as prompted before the final cut step.
- Enjoy!
In this project we use the Draw > Foil and Draw > Pen Operations.
Note: Cricut Joy machines complete the Foil step just before the Cut step. Any other Operations are completed before the Foil step, which means the Foil Transfer Sheet is applied to your base material mid-project without unloading the mat. Due to the space-saving size of Cricut Joy machines, this can be a challenge. Position your design and material partway down the mat to make it easier to affix the Foil Transfer Sheet when it’s time.
- Insert desired images and text, then select an Operation for each. In this example, we set the flowers to Draw > Foil and the text to Draw > Pen.
Tip: For text with a single-stroke appearance, choose a font that has a Writing style.
- Select the foil color you plan to use from the color swatch panel so Design Space can prompt you to use the correct material. Do the same for any Draw Opearation that uses a pen so you get prompted to insert the right pen color.
- Position images as desired. Use Attach to fasten Foil and Draw with pen layers to the appropriate Cut layer. Then select Make It to send your project to the machine.
- Attached items appear together in the preview, along with an ordered list of each Operation to be executed by the machine. Continue to the cut screen.
Tip: Move your design away from the edges and top of the mat on the project preview and place your base material on the mat accordingly. This will make it easier to switch foil colors when it's time.
- Select the material setting for your base material. In this example, we’re using cardstock. Follow the on-screen prompts to insert tools and prep materials as needed.
- To avoid track marks on your cards when foiling with Cricut Joy Xtra, move the machine star wheels to the sides of the rail, making sure none of them will roll over the top of the card.

Important: If your project uses multiple colors or Operation settings on the same cut layer, do not unload the mat when it’s time to change the tool or foil color. Be sure to remove foil as prompted before the final cut step.
