Cricut Explore 3 & Cricut Maker 3
What are Smart Materials?
These clever crafting materials work without a cutting mat, so you can just load the material directly into your Cricut Explore 3 or Cricut Maker 3 machine and go. Smart Materials come in a variety of material types, including Smart Vinyl, Smart Iron-On, and Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock.
What are the benefits of using Smart Materials?
With Smart Materials, Cricut Explore 3 and Cricut Maker 3 can cut a single image or repeated cuts up to 11.7 in (29.7 cm) wide and 12 feet (3.6 m) long! For all other materials, the size of your mat would limit the size of your design.
How do Smart Materials work?
Smart Materials come adhered to a special backer that can feed through Cricut Explore 3 or Cricut Maker 3 without the need for a cutting mat.
The software will prompt you when it’s time to load your Smart Materials and will tell you how much you need. Once material is loaded, your machine will measure it to ensure there’s enough for your project.
Your machine leaves a small allowance of material above and below your design for the rollers to grip and load the material, for the sensor to sense that enough material is loaded, and to feed materials back and forth through the machine. The software takes this allowance into account when estimating the amount of Smart Materials needed for your project. To ensure you have enough Smart Materials for your design, wait to trim them until after your cut is complete.
How should I prepare Smart Materials for cutting?
Smart Materials come ready to load into your machine. Align Smart Material with left material guide on the machine, then slide under mat guides and up against the rollers. Then press the load button. If you don’t use all your material in one cut, trim the excess and save for a future project. Trim the material straight across rather than at an angle if you plan to load it without a mat in the future.
To use scraps of Smart Materials shorter than 6 in (15.24 cm) or narrower than 13 in (33 cm), place them on a cutting mat.
How do I straighten Smart Materials if they loaded crookedly?
Cricut Explore 3 and Cricut Maker 3 will attempt to straighten your material when it measures your material length prior to cutting. If you notice that the material is still misaligned after measuring, unload and reload the material.
What do I do with leftover scraps of Smart Materials?
Smart Materials for Cricut Explore 3 and Cricut Maker 3 need to be at least 6 in (15.24 cm) in length to feed through the machine without a mat. For scraps shorter than that, use a cutting mat.
Keep in mind that the machine leaves a small allowance of material above and below your design.
Can I cut Smart Materials on previous models of Cricut Explore and Cricut Maker?
Cricut Explore 3 and Cricut Maker 3 have been designed, optimized, and rigorously tested for use with Smart Materials. Smart Materials are not intended for use with previous-generation Cricut Explore or Cricut Maker machines unless placed on a machine mat. Using Smart Materials with older machines without a mat may cause material jams, compromise cutting precision, and damage machine parts, so this use is at your own risk.
Will Cricut continue to produce materials other than Smart Materials?
Yes, we are always innovating for every craft and every crafter. You can expect materials in varieties of colors, textures, treatments, and even purposes to fit your needs.
