Understand Cricut Maker 5 indicator lights, button lights, Design Space messages, and recovery steps.
Cricut Maker 5 uses an indicator light and illuminated buttons to show its current state. Design Space provides instructions when the machine needs attention. Locate the light state or message you’re seeing in the table below to learn what it means and what steps to take next.
Indicator light meanings
| Light behavior | What it means | What to do |
| Solid white | Machine is powered on & ready to use. | Continue in Design Space. |
| White at half brightness | Machine is idle. This is normal – the machine is awaiting Instruction. | Select Cricut Maker 5 in Design Space or start a project. |
| Slow pulsing white | Activate machine. | Open Design Space and complete New Product Setup. |
| Flashing color | The machine has detected an error or needs attention. | Check Design Space for the specific error and guidance. |
| No light | The machine may not be receiving power. | Check the power adapter, cord connections, and wall outlet. |
Button light meanings
| Button behavior | What it means |
| Go/Pause button is solid | The machine is ready to use |
| Go/Pause button is flashing | Design Space has sent project information to the machine, and the machine is waiting for you to load a mat or material, or resume a paused project. |
| Unload button is flashing | The project is complete, or Design Space is ready for the mat or material to be unloaded. |
Important: Cricut Maker 5 uses Load & Go, which means the project begins automatically after you press the flashing Go/Pause button, and the material is loaded and measured.
Potential Design Space messages

| Setup required | The machine has not completed product setup. | Open New Product Setup in the Settings menu, choose Cricut Maker 5, and complete connection and firmware steps. |
| Firmware update required | The machine needs current firmware. | Keep power and the connection stable while the update installs. |
| Machine not found or connection lost | Design Space cannot communicate with the machine. | Select Cricut Maker 5 in the machine picker, check BLE permission or USB-C, and close other Design Space sessions. |
| Not enough material. | The machine measured less usable material than the project needs. |
Do one of the following: 1. Load a longer piece of material, 2. Trim the leading edge of the material so it is straight, or 3. Return to the preview and reduce the project size. |
| Tool not detected, or tool mismatched | The installed tool does not match the tool Design Space instructed to load for this project, or the machine is unable to electronically identify the installed tool. | Confirm the tool installed matches the tool indicated in Design Space, clean visible debris from the tool, seat it fully, and close the clamp. |
| Material or mat load error | The mat or material did not enter straight or reach the rollers. | Unload, check mat for damage along edges – replaced if damaged, realign under both guides, clear the path, and reload. |
| Cannot read sensor marks | Print Then Cut marks could not be scanned. | Check print scale, placement, glare, visible marks, and Print Then Cut calibration. |
Note: The machine will automatically scan for any gear housing tool selected for an operation, but non-gear housing tools are selected by default (if the option is available). Please pay close attention to which tool is installed in your housing and verify your tool selection in Design Space before pressing Go.
Recover from a flashing error light
- Pause and wait for all machine movement to stop.
- Read and record the full message in Design Space.
- Follow the on-screen instructions, including changing a tool, clearing a load issue, or reconnecting.
- If the message allows it, resume with the Go/Pause button.
- If the message returns, cancel the project in Design Space, unload when prompted, and disconnect the machine from power for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect, reopen Design Space, and test a simple project with the Premium Fine-Point Blade.
Important: If the error is accompanied by smoke, sparks, a burning smell, severe grinding, liquid exposure, or visible electrical damage, disconnect power if it is safe to do so and contact Cricut Member Care. Do not continue using the machine.
